Pipe Bending for Water and Wastewater Treatment

Large-diameter process and transmission piping, to A.W.W.A. standards.

What water and wastewater treatment work brings to a bending shop

Raw and finished water transmission mains, plant process piping, aeration and sludge lines, and the large-diameter bends around pumps, filters and clarifiers.

Water plant piping is large diameter, and large diameter is where most bending shops stop. A 30 or 36 inch bend around a clarifier or a pump gallery is exactly the size that runs out of suppliers, and it is the size this shop was built for. A.W.W.A. is also one of the standards the company publishes that it works to, which is not true of most general fabricators.

Codes and standards: A.W.W.A. standards, which American Pipe Bending publishes that it meets and exceeds, with ASME B31.3 where the piping is process rather than distribution. Send your project specification with the enquiry and we will confirm in writing what we certify against before anything is cut.

Bends instead of fittings

On a large-diameter run, every fitting is two welds and two inspections. A bent section replaces the fitting and both welds, which takes cost and inspection scope out of a job at the same time. On a plant with a tight gallery it can also be the only way to make a run fit at all.

Send the layout rather than a bend schedule if that is what you have. Working back from a drawing to the five numbers each bend needs is routine here, and it usually catches at least one dimension that does not close.

What to send with a water and wastewater treatment enquiry

Five numbers describe a bend: outside diameter, wall thickness, centerline radius, bend angle and the tangent length on each end. Add the material and the quantity and the job can be priced. A drawing, a sketch or a photograph of a marked-up print all work, and the quote form takes an attachment up to 25 MB.

For plant work, send the layout rather than a bend schedule if that is what you have. Working back from a drawing to the five numbers each bend needs is routine here, and it usually catches at least one dimension that does not close. Say whether the pipe is lined or coated, and whether that happens before or after bending.

Put the documentation requirements in the enquiry rather than in a later email. Material test reports, non-destructive testing and heat treatment all cost money and time. Retrofitting a documentation package onto a bend that has already been made is slow, and sometimes it is impossible.

Questions we get from water and wastewater treatment buyers

Do you work to A.W.W.A. standards?

Yes. A.W.W.A. is among the standards American Pipe Bending publishes that it meets and exceeds, alongside ASME, A.N.S.I. and PFI-ES24.

How large a water main can you bend?

Up to 42 inch outside diameter with a wall thickness up to 4 inches. That covers most plant and transmission work in one piece.

Can you bend lined or coated pipe?

Tell us at enquiry stage. A lining or a coating changes what the pipe will tolerate under both heat and draw, and whether it is applied before or after bending changes the answer entirely.
