Safety and Compliance
What a visitor, an inspector or a driver should expect on the Dawson Road site.
Why a bending floor is a controlled area
The hazards on this floor are the ones that come with moving heavy sections and heating metal. Sections weighing several tons are under crane. An induction coil heats pipe to the point where it glows, and the section stays hot long after it stops looking hot. Saws cut up to 24″ I.P.S..
None of that is unusual for heavy fabrication, and all of it is why floor access is controlled rather than open. A visitor going to the floor is accompanied, and the bend being witnessed is scheduled so that nobody is standing around waiting in a working bay.
Visiting the plant
Owner representatives and third party inspectors witness bends here regularly. Call ahead so the bend is scheduled for when you arrive: an induction bend is a single continuous pass and it cannot be paused while somebody parks.
Bring your own personal protective equipment if your company requires specific gear. Say in advance if you need a specific site induction or if your company requires a contractor safety qualification to be in place before a visit.
Why a code shop is a safety system as well as a quality one
The A.S.M.E. U and S stamps are usually described as a quality credential, and they are, but the mechanism is the same one that keeps people safe. A stamp means written procedures exist, the people doing the work are qualified against them, the records are kept and somebody outside the company audits all three.
A shop that records what it did to a pipe is a shop that knows what its equipment is doing. On the induction bender the forces are monitored and recorded through every pass, which is a quality record and also the first place an equipment problem shows up.
The same applies to material handling. Knowing the weight of a section before it is picked, and having a crane and a yard sized for it, is what turns a lift into a routine operation rather than a judgement call.
Deliveries and collections
The shop is open Monday to Friday, 5:00 am to 3:00 pm Central time, and the yard runs to more than 11 acres, so there is room to turn and to wait without blocking a road.
Drivers regularly say in public reviews that they are turned around quickly here, which is the one part of this business the wider world tends to notice. Call ahead with the load details so the crane and the space are ready.
Witnessing a bend
Third party inspectors and owner representatives witness bends here regularly, and it is worth knowing how the process constrains the visit. An induction bend is a single continuous pass. Once the pipe starts moving through the coil it cannot be paused, restarted or repeated, because the heat history of the material is part of the result.
So the bend is scheduled for when you arrive rather than the other way round. Call ahead with the date and the purchase order number and it is set up. If you need to see a specific hold point rather than the whole pass, say which one, because some of them are minutes apart.
Bring whatever personal protective equipment your own company requires. Tell us in advance if a contractor safety qualification has to be in place before the visit, or if you need a specific site induction, so that neither of those is discovered at the gate.
